Interview With total:spec

I recently did an interview with the guys over at total:spec. We talked music, the beginings of Deep Dimension, San Francisco, and the environment.  Here is a copy of it:

Blair is a young musician from San Francisco who [with the support of Steven G for live shows] is much better known as Deep Dimension.

As Deep Dimension Blair mixes alternative rock and pop roots with an electro sound that is influenced by a lot of all night raves and video game soundtracks. What comes out of this er, partying is an alt electro rock/pop sound that is now catching a lot of people’s attention.

Blair himself actually first started playing guitar at 13, after learning some chords from his father. He then started singing and performing live at the age of 14 and at 15 joined his first band as lead guitar.

He was the only member under 18 at the time and, when the band started playing in night clubs, the band members would often bring their own sharpie to mark an X on Blair’s hands in an effort to keep security from checking his [non-existent] ID.

Shocking behaviour.

Soon Blair became proficient on bass and drums and started writing and recording his own material.

Several bands later and, after plenty of time working on his craft, Blair decided to start his own project, and Deep Dimension was born.

So far Deep Dimension has released a single [Breathing, available online] with the debut EP, Air Ways [Signshop Records] out on 27 February.

A date for the diary, and the ears, there.

DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND -

The short answer would be electro/rock, elaborating into kind of spacey and dreamy, but there’s a little earth thrown in there too. Some songs are more synth’ based and some more guitar based.

Maybe you could say it’s like flying a space ship back to the 80s and 90s, then plunging into the future.

TELL US ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO -

It’s a very beautiful city. I’ve lived here about six years. I love how it has the densely populated urban metropolis, then you take a train to the west of the city and you run right into picturesque California beaches with postcard worthy landscapes. Just great!

San Francisco is also a city with culture and it certainly knows how to have a good time. Some of the liveliest parties I’ve ever been to have been here in SF. It’s very open and interactive city. There are a lot of great things I could say about it.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN MUSIC, AND WHY?

My father played in bands and wrote songs, so I was always around it from birth. I started playing guitar around 13-14 and it just clicked. Soon after that I was playing on stage and recording with bands. I always took it pretty seriously, but eventually I decided to start my own project and really go for it.

It went through a few incarnations before it became what it is today as Deep Dimension. I feel like I’ve come a long way but at the same time just getting started.

WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO ACHIEVE?

I strive to make interesting, quality music that impacts the culture over the long-term. I like to inspire and be inspired. I want to achieve musical Nirvana!

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE?

My EP, Air Ways, that is being released on 27 February. It was a long time in the making and it’s the highest quality and best sounding recording I’ve done to date. Up until now I have just been working with demos, so it’s an exciting step for me to have a professional release.

ANY LIVE SHOWS COMING UP?

The next show is at The Uptown in Oakland, CA on 30 January.  A CD release party for Air Ways in the San Francisco area is in the works and will be announced soon.

There is also talk of a tour later this year.

THE BEST THING ABOUT PERFORMING LIVE IS?

The whole experience is very energising. I always come off stage feeling great.

AND THE WORST?

It can get kinda sweaty with all those lights.

DID THE US PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION TURN OUT AS YOU EXPECTED?

It was a bit of a nail biter and was the most I’ve ever been into an election. I feel like it was a major fork in the road for the country and a lot was riding on it. It was so close but deep down I have to say yes I knew it all along – sort of.

WHO OR WHAT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RECESSION?

$4 cups of coffee, yeah that’s it.

IS CLIMATE CHANGE SUCH A BIG DEAL?

I haven’t written a thesis or anything on the matter but, yes, I think it’s something that needs to be looked at seriously with more changes made. For instance, I would love to see the US follow Germany’s example in using solar energy.

AT THE AGE OF 40 YOU WILL BE DOING WHAT?

Announcing my debut live performance on the moon?

Deep Dimension’s Air Ways is released via Signshop Records on 27 February. t:s
